Piqua Shawnee -- Enrollment
Enrollment in the Piqua Shawnee Tribe will be considered by the Tribal Council for applicants who can document their Shawnee ancestry. Those applicants who are of American Indian descent other than Shawnee must be descended from a tribe that was known to have lived with the Shawnees prior to the 1832 Removal Act. Potential applicants are encouraged to visit at least three tribal events so that we may may get to know you before any decisions are made regarding enrollment.
Requirements for Enrollment in the Piqua Shawnee Tribe:
The Piqua Shawnee Tribe of Alabama has the right to determine who is a member and citizen of the tribe, this includes the right to remove individuals from membership. People of good moral character with Shawnee ancestors or who are descended from a tribe that was known by the Tribal Council to have lived with the Shawnee prior to the 1832 Removal Act are eligible to petition the tribe for enrollment if that person agrees to follow Piqua Shawnee ways.
All applicants must be sponsored and attend a minimum of three tribal functions. They must provide documented genealogical research to prove they are descended from Shawnee or another acceptable tribe. The Piqua Shawnee Tribe will not conduct any genealogical research for the applicant or answer any genealogical questions for you.
We cannot accept oral family history or DNA. Your genealogy must be complete and official. Once you have compiled your official genealogical supporting materials, your sponsor may submit your application to the Tribal Counsel for review.
